Netflix is a service that provides a library of films and television shows which you can watch instantly through your smart TV, blu ray player, tablet, laptop or smartphone. It was first conceived of as a subscription service, in which DVDs would be sent to the addresses of those who signed up. However, it is now most popular as an online service. It has been active in the United Kingdom since 2012.

A Netflix account can be purchased via the official website. Once you have signed up, the full library will automatically become available to browse through on your personal computer. Afterwards, you can use the email address signed up with the log in to Netflix on a range of devices – smart televisions, smartphone or tablet apps, blu ray players, games consoles, etc.

How much does Netflix UK cost and what does each subscription plan give the user?

There are three types of subscription available on Netflix UK at varying prices. These are monthly subscriptions that come out of your bank account every month. Netflix does not do yearly subscriptions. If you are having trouble with your subscription, the Netflix UK contact number or online customer service may be able to assist.

Each subscription plan comes with a 30 day free trial that you can back out of before the subscription is charged.

The different plans are:

£5.99 – When you are logged in on this service, you can only stream movies or television shows on one device at a time. This means you cannot have someone watching Netflix in their bedrooms while others watch it in a living room. Furthermore, this package only allows you to stream in standard definition. Standard definition streams at 640 x 480 and requires 3 mbps.

£6.99 – This account allows you to stream Netflix on two devices at the same time. A person can be watching it on their tablet on the way to work while another uses it on their laptop with this subscription. Netflix also lets users stream in high definition with this option. Movies and television shows will be played in 1280 x 750. If you do not have the internet capabilities to stream at this quality, Netflix will automatically reduce it to standard definition.

£8.99 – The platinum plan, introduced towards the end of 2013, will allow users access to Netflix’s state-of-the-art Ultra HD streaming. This will allow you to watch television shows and movies in eye-popping 4K. You will also be able to stream across four different devices with the same user. Make sure you are able to handle the 25 mbps download speed required though.

What original content does Netflix produce?

Netflix began to create their own movies and television shows, beginning with the political thriller House Of Cards written by Beau Willimon and starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. The show is only available to watch on Netflix and doesn’t get shown on network or subscription television, nor on any of the other streaming services such as Amazon or NowTV.

Netflix has also had considerable success with many of its other shows including Orange Is The New Black, Daredevil, Bloodline and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It also owns the rights to some shows that were previous on television but, despite a cult following, ended up getting cancelled. These are shows such as the American remake of The Killing and the comedy Arrested Development.

How does the Netflix app work?

The Netflix app can be downloaded to Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices. Simply sign in to your account from whatever device it has been downloaded on and you will be able to access the full library of movies and television shows. The type of account you have will determine how many devices you can use at one time (see the section on subscriptions above). Technical difficulties related to the app should be directed to the customer service team via Netflix’s contact telephone number.

Does Netflix have subtitles or audio description?

Netflix has subtitles on much of its content. There are different ways to access these closed captions depending on how you are streaming from the service.

Mac and PC – Click the dialogue bubble.

Xbox/Playstation/Wii – Press on analog stick, scroll over the dialogue bubble and click it.

Amazon Fire TV – Press Menu, Turn Captions On, and press left and right to adjust size and colour.

Smartphone or tablet – Tap anywhere on the screen to access the options menu and select the dialogue bubble.

Netflix began to introduce audio description as of April 2015 after it came under criticism for not including them with its series Marvel’s Daredevil. Many felt that it was unfair to have a show with a blind protagonist inaccessible to people with the same disability. It has began to introduce audio description in its original content – House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Marco Pollo and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – with more to come throughout the rest of 2015.

Can I watch Netflix abroad?

When you sign up to Netflix, you gain access to the service for your country and only people logging on from IP addresses within that country will be able to use it. Therefore, if you go abroad and try and use Netflix, you will be automatically directed to that country’s Netflix service. If you do not have an account registered to use there, it will not be available.

Can I watch Netflix offline?

It is currently impossible to view Netflix offline. The company has also explained that this is unlikely to ever happen. You must be connected to the internet to access the Netflix library.
